Plan Your Weekend:

🎨 Greetings from Archway

Archway has a new postcard, and it's the size of a building.

Local street artist Hells Gibson has finished her second mural in a month: a giant, vintage style "Greetings from Archway" postcard on a wall near the high street, painted in just four days. Gibson grew up in Archway, and the mural is her tribute to it, inspired by the old "Greetings from…" postcards people used to send home. "Archway isn't usually thought of as a postcard destination," she says, "but for the people who live here, it's full of history, characters, landmarks, and stories worth celebrating."

Source: Hells Gibson

No one commissioned this. Gibson sought permission from the pub whose wall she painted, then got the council's support behind the project, and made the whole thing happen herself.

Local accounts, including Archway Market, shared the piece within days of it going up. Gibson wants people to pick up an actual postcard, write a note by hand, and send a piece of somewhere loved to someone far away.

Her advice is simple. Go see the mural. Then send one home.

My North London Top Events

The Cally Festival | 📍Caledonian Road, N1 | 5 July | Free
Once a year, they close Caledonian Road and 7,000 people throw a party in it. Music, performance, art, workshops, street food and a market. 12pm to 6pm.

House Clearance Sale | 📍1 Shaftesbury Road, N19 | 4 July | (£)
Something a little different this week, and a first for us. A family is opening up their grandmother's house after she passed away, and inviting neighbours in to take home a piece of it: plant pots, books, furniture, clothes, vintage toys, collectibles, a lifetime of bits and pieces. Prices are low and they'd love to see her things go to people who'll enjoy them. Go and have a wander between 11am and 2pm. ( thanks for sharing, Lola)

Vintage Weekend | 📍Priory Park, N8 | 4 - 5 July | Free
Priory Park turns a hundred this year, and to mark it the steam fair is back after four years away. Horton's Steam Fair runs both days, 11am to 8pm, its beautiful set of steam gallopers at the centre, with the Mayor of Haringey opening the weekend from the carousel platform at 11am on Saturday. That same day brings the park's first ever Classic Car Pageant, over fifty vehicles from a Jaguar E-type to a 1960s hearse, alongside vintage fire engines and a Routemaster from the Whitewebbs Museum. Hornsey is where Lotus was founded in 1952, and at 5pm a parade of Lotus cars, two of them built in the original factory, drives from the park through Hornsey to that old factory by the station. Kids can build and race their own toy cars too. Free entry, rides charged on the day.

My Dinner With Jess Cole & Friends | 📍Myddleton Grange Community Hall, N4 | 4 July | (£)/Pay what you want
The idea is simple: nobody should have to eat alone. Jess Cole runs a travelling community supper that brings strangers to one long table for the evening, and this one lands near Manor House with a two-course Korean meal from Gim, a husband-and-wife kitchen, plus Caribbean mezze and a Nepalese dessert. There's live music and performances through the night, it's pay-what-you-want and BYOB, and what you give goes to Breadline London to keep the meals going. Plant-based throughout. From 6pm, book by emailing [email protected] with your name and any allergies.

Bowes Park Pride | 📍Myddleton Road, N22 | 5 July | Free
London Pride is the day before, but if big crowds aren't your thing, Bowes Park has its own. Myddleton Road closes to traffic for a neighbourhood Pride celebration with live music, performances, food stalls and local businesses. Relaxed, family friendly and rooted in the local community. 12pm to 6pm.

Jazz and More on the Green | 📍Hadley Green, EN5 | 5 July | (£)
An open air music afternoon on Hadley Green in Barnet, organised by the Hadley Residents' Association. Four bands across the afternoon including the Lazy Rhythm Boys, Lana Shelley, The Truants and Highstone. Bring a picnic, refreshments available on site. Proceeds go towards a management plan for Hadley Green and its ponds. Grounds open 12pm, music 1pm to 6pm.

Ceramics Market & Open Garden | 📍Rochester Square, NW1 | 4 July | Free
Artist Ewelina is leading a communal build at Rochester Square, and what everyone makes becomes a permanent fish pond in the garden. Member artists sell their pots, vases and sculptures, there's free clay workshops and pot painting to join in, and food and drink out in the garden while the kids meet the hens and rabbits. 11am to 5pm.

Ally Pally Allotments Open Day | 📍Ally Pally Allotments, N22 | 5 July | (£)
Wander 140 allotment plots on a south-facing hillside beside Alexandra Park, with views across to central London and, on a clear day, the North Downs. Set up in 1917, the site runs like an urban village: a members' shop, a community polytunnel, beehives kept by North London Beekeepers, and a weekly art group who draw and then put the kettle on. Meet the growers, see how it works, and browse plants, produce and secondhand tools for sale. Home-made teas, dogs and picnics welcome. Adults £5, children free, and it all goes to the National Garden Scheme's charities. 1pm to 4pm.

South Kilburn CarniVale | 📍Peel Plaza, NW6 | 4 July | Free
Day of music, dance and food where South Kilburn's communities share their traditions from Irish dancers and a Jamaican maypole, Bengali artists turning trash into treasure, and Iranian, Bangladeshi, Mediterranean and Lebanese food all in one place. There's live music and DJ sets, dance workshops and a play zone for the kids. Come in your team shirt for the World Cup games, or your best traditional dress for the costume prize. Now in its fifth year, everyone is welcome, 1pm to 5pm.

My Dinner With Jess Cole & Friends | 📍Myddleton Grange Community Hall, N4 | 4 July | (£)/Pay what you want
The idea is simple: nobody should have to eat alone. The Big Day Out | 📍Whittington Park, N19 | 4 July | Free

Coopers' Cask Race | 📍Guildhall Yard, EC2 | 4 July | Free
Turn up and watch teams of four roll beer barrels across the cobbles of Guildhall Yard, the Lord Mayor and City dignitaries among them in full livery robes. Anyone can come along, it's free, and there's a blessing of the casks before racing starts, which tells you how seriously the City takes it, on ground that was once a Roman amphitheatre. The kids get their own Mini-Coopers race with smaller casks too. Racing from 9.30am.

Jester Festival | 📍Fortune Green, NW6 | 4 July | Free
For 52 years, a handful of volunteers have put on a festival on Fortune Green, and they're still at it. This is the day West Hampstead comes out for its own: live music, a funfair, circus skills and a climbing wall, the raffle with prizes from every shop on the high street, and whatever the volunteers have dreamed up this year. What money it makes goes to the West Hampstead Food Hub, feeding neighbours who need it. Go down between 11.15am and 6.30pm.

Bar Rioja Festival | 📍Bar Rioja, N1 | 4 July | (£)
Starts as a wine tasting, ends as a party. Sixteen Riojas to work through in a hidden Victorian courtyard off Pentonville Road, with someone carving Ibérico ham, paella when you need it, and a DJ who runs from mid-afternoon well into the evening.

Summer Live Music at Firs Farm | 📍Firs Farm Community Hub, N21 | 5 July | Free The people behind Firs Farm want to build a sensory garden, an accessible, shared space of pollinator plants, winding paths and things to tickle every sense, and this afternoon of live music is how they're raising the money for it. Local bands play 90s indie, funk, soul and rock'n'roll from 2pm to 6pm, with food and drink and the wetlands right there to wander.

Love's Labour's Lost | 📍Camden Square, NW1 | 5 July | (£)
Shakespeare in the Squares marks its tenth anniversary with Love's Labour's Lost in Camden Square, a comedy of flirtation, foolishness and falling in love, directed by Toby Gordon. The company stages one Shakespeare play per London garden square each summer, working with local committees to build something tailored to each venue. Their patron is Dame Judi Dench. Gates open from 3.30pm so you can picnic before the play starts at 5pm sharp, with a brief interval and a finish by 7pm.

Art + Design Market | 📍Abney Public Hall, N16 | 4 - 5 July | Free
60 independent artists and makers fill Abney Public Hall on Stoke Newington Church Street, selling art prints, zines, ceramics, handmade jewellery and slow fashion, the kind of one-off pieces you won't find on the high street. The makers are there to chat about how they work if you want to ask, and there's pierogi from Pierogi Queen and seasonal teas to keep you going. Accessible, dog friendly, free entry, 11am to 5pm both days.

Warm Studios First Birthday | 📍Blue House Yard, N22 | 4 July | Free
Warm Studios in Wood Green turns one, and they're throwing an evening to thank the community that got them through the first year. Music, food, sweet treats, creative activities and games, plus a raffle raising money for founder Princess Adenrele. Warm Studios started in 2025 as a space for making, workshops and connection, as much a place to talk as to shop. Whether you've been in since day one or never been, you're welcome. Wheelchair accessible, 6pm to 11pm.
